Transformer Outline Designer – Full Time, Permanent

Position Goal:

Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, the Transformer Outline Designer is responsible for converting customer and engineering requirements into cost effective, manufacturable outlines, using modeling software. Planning, organizing and evaluating engineering and customer requirements, to identify material requirements, and to develop cost effective, practical designs.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design medium to large power transformer outlines (up to 600 MVA, 500 kV) that meet both customer specifications and all applicable standards.
  • Perform required mechanical calculations like stiffener, lifting, center of gravity oil & weights inputting into mechanical design spreadsheets.
  • Draft engineering outline drawings on Creo Parametric (3D CAD software)
  • Edit and design parts of the transformer model (Creo Parametric)
  • Perform alterations to models and drawings due to changes made to initial designs (REIs – Revised engineering instructions)
  • Order tanking components like fans, pumps radiators and valves using SAP
  • Update and upload drawings using PTI’s document manager (Workflow)
  • Identify areas for improvements in manufacturing processes, efficiencies, operational capacity and ISO standards
  • Comply with the Manitoba Workplace Health and Safety regulations
  • Take reasonable care to protect oneself and others who may be affected by their actions or omissions
  • Use all devices, clothing and personal protective equipment designated by PTI and by the regulations
  • Co-operate with any other person exercising a duty imposed by the Workplace Safety and Health Act or the regulations
  • Performing according to company’s certified ISO standards

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in power transformer outline design
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Professional Engineer designation would be an asset
  • Registered with CTTAM or be eligible to be registered
  • Experience in 3D Modelling Software is required (e.g. Unigraphics, Inventor, Solid Works, Solid Edge, CREO, 3D CAD)
  • Computer literacy (Office Suite and AutoCAD)
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes
  • High mechanical aptitude with exceptional ability and hands on experience, attention to detail and spatial visualization skills
  • Demonstrate leadership, organizational and planning skills, including problem solving
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels in the organization and external customers
